Meet Kayla

Kayla is a Jesus-loving, joy-chasing homeschool mom who never imagined she'd be on this journey - until 2020, when she felt called to live life a little differently. A public school graduate turned homeschool advocate, Kayla has found renewed purpose in building a Christ-centered foundation for her kids through learning at home.

In 2022, her family bought some land from relatives, relocated to "the country", and spent 369 days living in a camper while building their forever home. Their first year homeschooling was spent living in the camper, and their second and third years saw her family navigating a season of deployment. Kayla is living proof that your homeschooling journey is uniquely yours and she has experienced the freedom of being able to tailor her children/s education to their individual needs and to the needs of the whole family in any season of life.

Kayla calls herself an eclectic homeschooler—part Charlotte Mason, part traditional, with a sprinkle of unschooling and a heavy dose of real-life learning. As a recovering Type A personality, she loves a good curriculum plan, but also follows her children’s curiosities into rich, hands-on unit studies. Whether it’s baking, playing board or card games, or doing chicken chores, she’s always looking for ways to make learning meaningful.

She considers herself more "outsidey" than outdoorsy, never turns down a travel opportunity, and, while she is a self-proclaimed extreme extrovert, she cherishes the slow, quiet days at home. You can find her milling flour, chatting with her chickens, and sharing her homeschooling adventures over @scratchmadesimple on all the socials.

Meet Kat

Kat is a child of God, living in northwest Georgia with her husband and son where she’s a Wild + Free group leader, THRIVE Enrichment Program teacher, and co-host of the Homeschooling Down South podcast. Kat has an affection for nature and play, which grew from a childhood forged in the redwood forest of northern California where she spent seventeen summers at Camp Redwood as a camper, counselor-in-training, counselor, and director. She became enchanted with understanding how people learn while earning a specialized education master's degree intended to unify college student success to look holistically at learning sciences and human development. In 2019 Kat entered a learning sciences doctorate program and completed one year before withdrawing to raise her son. Since leaving formal education, she's fallen in love with Charlotte Mason's applied philosophy for education.

Kat is blessed to be able to bring her enthusiasm for learning home to create a wholeschool for her son, and to continue to explore and gain understanding of the value of informal and unconventional learning. Her lean toward Charlotte Mason's method, and her own experiences, have inspired her to create an atmosphere like summer camp for her home learning environment. Kat puts her attention on nurturing the atmosphere of her home,  adventuring with her family, increasing local access to nature, sharing beautiful words and stories, and encouraging homeschool families. She’s happiest when sharing a meal at a picnic table or campfire.

You can find her telling stories at her camp-site, www.recreatingcamp.com, and follow her journey of homeschooling an only child @recreatingcamp on Instagram.
